The Workshop Schedule

Workshop Information:
The Alchemy of Yoga and Kirtan

Join Nubia Teixeira and her husband Jai Uttal for an afternoon of Bhakti Yoga. In this workshop we will explore how the body, the heart, and the mind support and complement each other in our journey towards oneness. Nubia will lead the asana and pranayama practice, which will anchor us in our bodies and open us to the meditative practice of calling to the divine. Jai will lead us in the ancient practice of Kirtan, or chanting, the heart and soul of devotional yoga. Together they will guide us in a heart-opening adventure through breath, movement and sacred sound, blending those traditions in a deep and playful way. All levels are invited.

Jai Uttal, sacred music composer, recording artist, instrumentalist, and ecstatic vocalist, combines music and inspiration from India with his background in western folk, jazz, and popular traditions, creating a stimulating and exotic multi-cultural fusion that is truly world spirit music. Having traveled extensively in India, where he met many beautiful saints and singers, Bhakti yoga became his personal path. Jai has been leading kirtans around the world for more than 30 years, creating a safe environment for people to open their hearts and voices. His sixth CD, "Mondo Rama", was nominated for a Grammy award. Jai recently released two Cds on the Sounds True label: "Kirtan: The Art and Practice of Ecstatic Chant", and "Music For Yoga And Other Joys..."

Mudras Workshop

Join Nubia in this unique and joyful workshop in the art of Mudras, or symbolic hand gestures.

The hands are an extension of the heart and by creating different shapes and forms with our hands we are able to tell stories and poems, pray, play and dance. Through this sacred and ancient practice we can give body to our feelings and emotions and access a “non-verbal“ realm of expression. We will learn mudras that represent and invoke the gods and goddesses of the Hindu pantheon, as well as mudras that act as symbols of nature and the elements.

Pranayama Workshop

Like the stars, the sun and the planets, we human beings contain within ourselves a reflection of the entire cosmos. And as everything in the universe has it’s own unique rhythm, so do we; a rhythm that keeps us alive and interconnected with all of creation. Through the practice of self-knowledge and meditation we can tune ourselves with this distinctive inner flow. Pranayama is one of the many paths to reach this awareness.

Pranayama is the practice of conscious breathing with the intention of assimilating the vital energy, or prana that permeates the air that we breathe. The volume of prana that circulates inside of our bodies determinates our level of vitality and health.

In this workshop we will learn how to use the breath to purify the body and to increase our vital energy. We will explore different types of pranayama exercises to be practiced at different times of the day and in different situations. And through the rudiments of rhythmic breathing techniques we will dive into subtle states of consciousness and introspection.
